on-line searchable tree

From Ruth Ling, (With many thanks to her for allowing us to share these lovely photographs with others)

Dear Sheila, At last I have got round to scanning some ancient Yeo photographs, lent to me by my uncle, Alan Inkster (grandson of Henry Yeo born 1868) and am sending them to you (one by one for technical reasons). I have included some information about each photograph. For the picture whose file name is "Yeos of Wimbledon Park": This photograph must have been taken early in 1900 as the baby in the centre is Edith Irene Beryl Yeo (known as Beryl), who was born on 28 January 1900. On either side are her parents, Henry (born 1868 in Totteridge, North London) and Sarah (nee Jarrett).

Behind are Henry and Sarah's sons Everard Lisle (known as Lisle) Yeo, born in 1892 at 195 Vauxhall Bridge Road, Pimlico; and Arthur Henry Yeo, born in 1894 in Halsey Street, Chelsea. The man and boy on the left are unidentified. When this picture was taken in 1900, the family was living at 20 Quarry Road, Wandsworth Common, South London, where Beryl was born. But the location is most probably a Victorian photographer's studio, rather than a rugged corner of Wandsworth Common. Do edit as heavily as you wish! I hope to see them on your site sometime. Best wishes, Ruth

Ruth kindly sent me these delightful photographs of Henry & Sarah's family. Henry's father John moved to outer London, from Bishop Tawton Devon, in the mid 1800's. John was a coachman and in 1881 John and Emma were living at Berrys Bank Cottage, Greenham, Berkshire.

The Yeo family in the back garden of their house at 12 The Crescent, Wimbledon Park, South London in approximately 1910. Clockwise from left: Henry Yeo (born 1868); Arthur Henry Yeo (born 1894); Beryl Yeo (born 28 January 1900, died November 1973); Lisle Yeo (born 1892); Sarah Yeo; the petulant five-year-old being restrained by her parents is Mildred Vera ("Moot") Yeo. Moot was born in this house in 1905, died in it on 31 December 1973, and lived nowhere else.

Only six years after this photograph was taken, the family lost both their sons within nine weeks of each other. Arthur, a sergeant in the Canadian Infantry (Western Ontario Regiment), was killed in action at Calgary, Canada, on 10 August 1916, aged 22. Lisle, Second Lieutenant in the Machine Gun Corps (Inf), died at Mericourt-L'Abbé on the Somme, France, on 7 October 1916, aged 24. Henry's great-granddaughter,.

Ruth writes: "Henry, a solicitor's clerk at Lincoln's Inn Fields, bought the Edwardian house brand new in 1902 for £200. It remained in the family until the death of his daughters Beryl and Moot (my grandmother and great-aunt) in November and December 1973, and was sold in 1974 for £20,000 (at which time the original 1902 scullery remained unchanged). Today it would go for more than half a million!"

Claude and Beryl went on to have another child, Alan Henry Peter Inkster, born in 1931, now living in Surrey. Claude, a pharmacist of Sutton, Surrey, died in 1936 of septicaemia following an insect bite, and his widow, Beryl, and her children returned to the Yeo family home in Wimbledon Park to live with Beryl's parents and unmarried sister.

Beryl was a teacher at Merton Park Primary School until her retirement in 1960. Henry died just a few years after this picture was taken, on 28 April, 1933, at his office at 47 Lincoln's Inn Fields.

Henry's great-granddaughter, Ruth Ling, writes: "Just as the lace curtain doesn't appear to have moved in the 20 years between this picture and the one taken in 1910, the house I remember from my childhood in the 50s and 60s was little changed from this photograph of circa 1930 - the same Victorian dining chairs were still there in the 70s! The only difference I remember is that a wooden arbour had been built outside the French windows of the dining room by the late 50s, which became the new location for family photographs."

This photograph was taken in 1929 or 1930 in the garden of the Yeo house at 12 The Crescent, Wimbledon Park. From left to right: Claude Inkster; his sister-in-law Moot Yeo (born 1905); her father Henry Yeo (born 1868); Henry's wife Sarah; Henry and Sarah's eldest daughter, Beryl (Inkster, nee Yeo), and her daughter, Mary Evelyn Inkster (later Mrs Trevor Ling, born 4 November 1926, died 18 October 1973).

Rachel's Tree

Hello Sheila, I have been in contact before, and you were very kind to a beginner researcher. I got fed up looking for specific people from all my Devon names (sooo many) so I started doing blanket searches. I have some notes on Yeo marriages, baptisms, burials from some parishes. Is it the sort of info you would like? If it is I will write it out and send it to you (I'm not very good at typing). I am descended from John Yeo and Sarah Kelly of Marwood (I know this because you gave me the information) My greatgrandfather was Albert Yeo who married Ada Wakeham, their daughter Alvena Ada Lorraine Yeo was my wonderful Grandma. I have recently been in touch with Paula Brentnall through Genesconnected, she gave me your website address. I look forward to hearing from you regards Rachel Daine 3 Ludwell Lane, Wonford, Exeter, Devon EX2 5LU

Rachel,s grandmother and her sister were brought up living at the Bishops Palace, Exeter. The Bishops wasn't in residence at the time and it was being used by the Ministry of Pensions whom her great grandfather worked for. Their brother Frederick was the first child to be born there for 1 to 2 hundred years,

Rachel has done a tremendous amount of work for the Yeo One Name Study transcribing many parish registers with new events which have added to our huge database.

Brian's Tree

What would I do without Brian ! Every few months an A.4 envelope arrives from Brian, full of information on the Yeos in the Barnstaple area. Brian has lived in that area all his life and knows so many people. He has been extracting newspaper cutting, information on M.I.'s and talking to different family members relating to our Yeo families. Brian has a wealth of knowlege on other Barnstaple families and if anyone is visiting the area it is well worth contacting him. One of the future Yeo projects is a book of the Barnstaple area Yeo trees and this will be deposited in the Barnstaple Library. This area still has the largest density of Yeo descendants Brian can be contacted at :-
