Zachary Purchase - Gold Medallist in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games

Congratualtions to Zac on his spectacular win at the 2008 Beijing Games. The event was watched by millions and what a race it was. Zac was selected in the lightweight men's double scull for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and won the gold medal along with his colleague, Mark Hunter. The pair pumped the air as they went over the finish line and Purchase stood up to wave to GB fans after holding off a fast finishing Greek crew of Dimitrios Mougios and Vasileios Polymeros who took silver.

His most ardent fan has to be his grandmother, Mary, who was there to watch and photograph him in Beijing and was televised in tears at the end of the race.

Mary and her brother, Joe Spiers spent their war years living at Drumbridges with their grandparents John & Carrie Yeo after they were evacuated from Kent. Joe attended Blackpool School and now lives in Bovey Tracey.

Beatrice Yeo , daughter of John Yeo and Catherine Lee , was born on 14 Sep 1902 in Stokenteignhead, Devon. and moved to Kent where she met Joe Spiers and married him in 1927.

Their children were Mary and Joe. Mary married Gordon Richard Purchase and their children are Richard , who married Alison Tadman and have two children, Sam and Kattie and Nicholas who married Ms Holyer and have two children , Freyja and Zachary .

Zac is a very talented rower. He won a bronze medal in the lightweight double scull at the 2007 World Rowing Championships. He was the 2006 World lightweight single's champion and won in the same class at the 2007 GB Rowing Senior Trials. He is the World Record holder in this class, achieved at the World Championship final at Eton in 2006.

He won silver in the lightweight men's double at the Linz World Cup in June 2007, silver in the lightweight men's double at the Amsterdam World Cup and bronze in the lightweight men's double at the Lucerne World Cup. In the 2008 World Cup series he raced in the lightweight double winning three golds.

Zac is one of Britain's most talented young scullers. At the 2005 GB Rowing Senior Trials, in his first 2000m race as a lightweight, he made the A Final and finished 3rd, an excellent result.

In 2005 he raced as a senior single sculler at the Eton World Cup Regatta, finishing fourth, and went on to win silver at the Munich World Cup in June 2005.

Having won the World U23 title in a lightweight single scull in 2005, he carried on to the senior World Championships later that year to take a world silver medal in the same boat class.

In his first major senior-level outing in Lucerne in June of 2006, he won a gold in the lightweight single scull, despite having missed much of the preceding winter's training with a wrist injury.

On the strength of that result and his 2005 achievements, he was selected to race for Great Britain in the lightweight single scull at the World Championships at Eton in August 2006, where he took the gold medal in front of a home crowd.

Zac has an engaging manner and is focused on success. He takes a keen interest in everything that happens around him.
